Have you ever thought about how technology changes our perception of the city? “CitySound” is a project in which 11 young adults from this city have been recruited, have built their own low-tech audio recorder, and have the taken a soundwalk through Longgang, where each young adult decided which sounds they would like to record. They used the self-made wearable audio recorder to record the sound, and brought it back into this exhibition, where we can now listen to their individual perspective on the soundscape of Longgang – mediated through technology that blends “low-fi” with “high-fi.”
The projects on display are based on the results created by the workshop "CitySound". In this workshop, participants learnt to make their own recording equipment and choose a custom shape for it. These devices look like low-tech electronics but have high-tech features that allow them to record, store, playback, and display recordings. At the same time, they observed the electrical signals in the circuit through an oscilloscope, to visualize the audio. Showing the combination and clash of low technology and high technology.
DIY Sound Recorders
On the topic of “CitySound”, the workshop participants learnt to build their own sound recording device and choose a custom shape for it. These devices look like electronics, quite low tech, but they have high-tech functionality and can record, store, playback, and present sound recordings. It’s a device in which low tech meets high tech. The participants will then explore the nearby streets and collect “City Sounds.” While walking, participants learn to listen to the city sound through technology, and they will understand how technology changes the way they listen.
Interaction Interface
The audience clicks on the interactive sound device to listen to and experience the sound works recorded and produced by the workshop participants. It demonstrates different participants’ understanding of sound, high-tech and low-tech, and “sound city”, and also explores how technology and cities are always connected in diverse ways.
